Liberty vs. the State
How do Libertarians live in a state-controlled society without becoming martyrs to their cause, or pragmatic opportunists? Murray Rothbard answers this very important question here.

Three years later I was summoned to the Mother Superior’s chamber. I was very much afraid. She didn’t often call young nuns to her unless they were guilty of a misdemeanor. I walked down the hall and turned into a corridor. There was her gilt door in front of me. I did not want to go in. What should I say? How should I explain my innocence? What had I done wrong? At last I made myself turn the knob, and the door creaked heavily on its hinges. “Sit down,” she said, more kindly than I expected. She didn’t speak…
Am I the only one here who missed signing the Social Contract? Maybe I was sick that day. Oh wait…James Ostrowski argues that there never was a Social Contract, implicit or explicit. Hmmm…then how did we “consent” to being governed by this government?
Here is an excellent article by Butler Shaffer on why McChrystal had to go. It elaborates very nicely on a few thoughts I had yesterday on the subject, here.
Some of my thoughts on the World News tonight on MSNBC: David Petraeus replaced Stan McChrystal today, less than 48 hours after McChrystal criticized the President. What to say? Neat work for the president. He “nipped it in the bud.” Nice. If someone was telling me I was wrong, I’d nip it in the bud too. I can’t say it shows the President has good leadership qualities, it seems that most anyone would have done that. Perhaps it was to revive the sagging war enthusiasm in here in the States. It hasn’t made me feel any better though. Housing numbers were…

“The health department these days, man, they’re out for blood.” Someone commenting on the danger of attempting a project that was borderline on legal. This person didn’t say, “the health department, man, they’re really saving lives.” Isn’t that just the way of things? It caught me off guard, to hear someone else say this. But when you think about government, isn’t this the pattern of government? A department or bureau is created to help the average citizens…and before you know it, this department is just causing homeowners to abandon perfectly legitimate projects (on their own property too!) because of red…
Thanks to this, I got a heads-up about this film being aired on Wisconsin Public Television tomorrow night. Although we don’t live in Wisconsin, we’re close enough that we get WPT anyways. I usually watch their “Sherlock Holmes” episodes on Thursday nights, but tomorrow night, I won’t turn it off at 9pm, but will stay up and watch “For Liberty: How the Ron Paul Revolution Watered the Withered Tree of Liberty.” I’ve been very excited about seeing this, but didn’t have the money to buy it…now, thanks to our wonderful government (isn’t that ironic?) I can watch it for free!…
There are two courses that you can sign up for, both having to do with the Road to Serfdom. One of them has no registration costs, and you can take the class at your own pace. Simply observe the United States government, keep an eye on everything that they’re doing, from internet regulations, to healthcare, to oil drilling regulations, and you see see how to pave the road to serfdom, if you ever happen to become a president, king, dictator, etc… The other is $175 to register, but is taught by Tom DiLorenzo, and will talk about “Despotism, Now and…
