Thus Begins My Second Weekend

I may have said this before, but working every day gives the weekend a whole new dimension. “Oh…so that’s why people are so excited about Friday nights…” I must say that my job has helped me have more sympathy for other people. In a sense, my job is bringing me out of the idealistic stage of youth. Don’t worry, it hasn’t made me entirely cynical yet, but it is slowly happening. For one thing, I understand now why some people don’t have the time to do things they like. Someone says they want to come to our Mises Circle, but…

A Philosophical Dilemma

Oddly enough, this post was inspired by an Andy Griffith episode I watched last night. Let me quickly summarize the story so this will make sense. Ellie (works at drugstore) discovers there’s a girl living out on a farm near town who longs to have make-up, lipstick, perfume, etc…but doesn’t have any. So Ellie and Andy go out to the farm and give her a sampling of these items as a gift. The girl’s father walks up to them, discovers the items, and makes his daughter give them back to Ellie, saying that she doesn’t have any need for them….

Thoughts on Egypt

I know that everyone is suddenly saying, “oh…I’ve got some thoughts on Egypt” or “I’ve always had a feeling about Egypt…” but hey, if you’re here reading my blog it is because you like what I say, so you might just appreciate my thoughts on the Egyptian crisis. Frankly, I haven’t thought much about Egypt before. It is like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I vaguely knew they existed, but it wasn’t until everyone started talking about it that I got interested. I was watching some of the footage from it last week. I have mixed thoughts about what’s going…

Mises Academy Class Starts Tonight!

I think the most exciting thing for me this week has been the prospect of taking this course on logic from the Mises Academy. As I’ve said before, I’m a little nervous about it, but I’m not in it to get the best grade but to learn, so even if my essays are horrible but I have learned from it, then it will be worth it. I’d like to see you at this class too, there’s still time to sign up! On other subjects, I’m finally contemplating the idea of getting my driver’s license. I’ll be able to do it…

A Crime Without a Victim: Is It Possible?

I had an interesting discussion with my family  this morning. It started out as a tirade against the speed limits. This is how it started: Point One: The government says that when you drive over the prescribed limit, there’s a greater likelihood that you will harm yourself, your passengers and also others on the road. My point: Why stop there? Point Two: Carrying on many conversations with people of various ages while trying to drive is distracting. It is harder to concentrate when your two-year old is saying something quite incomprehensible but she really wants you to understand what it…

Biblical Anarchism?

I know this seems like I’m terribly biased towards Christians being anarchists, as the only articles I post are from that side of it. I did read a good article from the other perspective (anti-anarchy for Christians) but I didn’t bookmark it (nearly all my troubles in life, or at least on my computer, are caused by not bookmarking important things) so I’m not sure where it is. When I find it, I will post it. But in the meantime, here is one from LewRockwell.com.

Hamilton vs. Jefferson

I’ve spent nearly every evening this week watching the HBO series on John Adams. It has all been very fascinating. I have the impression that overall, it is extremely accurate. Their John Adams actor (Paul Giamatti) even looks like the pictures we have of John Adams. By the end of the movie his teeth are black and rotting. I don’t know if John Adams really had this dental problem, but I assume that if he hadn’t, they would not have made their actor look unattractive. He and most of the main players look very realistic. HBO probably didn’t intend this,…

Can a Christian Be an Anarchist?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself lately. I’ve done a lot of thinking, not to mention praying, on this subject. Here are some thoughts… Consider this hypothetical situation: 1) There is a tyrannical despot ruling over a country. 2) God “raptures” all believers (no, I don’t believe in “the rapture”…but it is useful for this imaginary situation). 3) Unbelievers rebel against the government and slowly anarchy emerges. Private road systems form. People begin offering their services…post offices, crime protection, etc… 4) God brings Christians back to the world and sets them in this anarchic society. In this situation,…

Wednesday Report

Sadly, there isn’t much to report…last night while playing piano I thought of some really good topic to discuss here, but of course I didn’t write it down, so I can’t remember now. Here are some odds and ends. Yesterday the girls and I had a history class. It is usually on Wednesdays, but they were begging me to do it a day early. We were talking about the writing of the Constitution. I’m eager to buy Hans Hoppe’s book, “Democracy: The God That Failed.” I don’t think the girls quite understand the fundamental shift that occurred when the Articles…

Freedom to Be Young

There are many things I want to say, I’ve got these thoughts spilling out, I’m trying to keep them from running away. So this might turn out to be a rather messy blog post, my apologies. 1) I want to say that it is very fascinating to be so “into” this whole freedom movement at such a young age. Since I was attending tea parties at age 15, I was able to figure out where I stood on issues much earlier than others. But more importantly, it has given me the time and opportunity to develop my thinking. I haven’t…
