The Nature of Government

“The health department these days, man, they’re out for blood.” Someone commenting on the danger of attempting a project that was borderline on legal. This person didn’t say, “the health department, man, they’re really saving lives.” Isn’t that just the way of things? It caught me off guard, to hear someone else say this. But when you think about government, isn’t this the pattern of government? A department or bureau is created to help the average citizens…and before you know it, this department is just causing homeowners to abandon perfectly legitimate projects (on their own property too!) because of red…

Bashing BP

(For Doing Exactly What Government Led Them To Do) by Matthew Novak, from Mises.org Although I am not one to condone negligence or malice, I have no intention of adding my voice to the chorus bashing BP. After all, they are one of many companies providing fuel for our cars, generating electricity to power our homes, and enabling so many aspects of our lives today. I could not readily type this short article, and expect to send it to an editor who will read it within a few hours and let me know whether he is interested, without companies like…

For Liberty: Ron Paul Presidential Campaign Documentary on Public TV

Thanks to this, I got a heads-up about this film being aired on Wisconsin Public Television tomorrow night. Although we don’t live in Wisconsin, we’re close enough that we get WPT anyways. I usually watch their “Sherlock Holmes” episodes on Thursday nights, but tomorrow night, I won’t turn it off at 9pm, but will stay up and watch “For Liberty: How the Ron Paul Revolution Watered the Withered Tree of Liberty.” I’ve been very excited about seeing this, but didn’t have the money to buy it…now, thanks to our wonderful government (isn’t that ironic?) I can watch it for free!…

The Road to Serfdom Course

There are two courses that you can sign up for, both having to do with the Road to Serfdom. One of them has no registration costs, and you can take the class at your own pace. Simply observe the United States government, keep an eye on everything that they’re doing, from internet regulations, to healthcare, to oil drilling regulations, and you see see how to pave the road to serfdom, if you ever happen to become a president, king, dictator, etc… The other is $175 to register, but is taught by Tom DiLorenzo, and will talk about “Despotism, Now and…

Hope vs. Fear or Control vs. Liberty?

Published last fall at Northern Illinois Liberty I happened to be listening to NPR this morning, and heard an astounding speech from Obama on Saturday. He said something like this, “You know, America has done this before. FDR heard the same thing when he introduced Social Security. They said it was socialist. They did. Verbatim.” If this wasn’t my president, I’d laugh, it is so absurd. Obama says, Americans claimed Social Security was socialist [as if you couldn’t tell by the name] and look, it is alright, isn’t it? Social Security isn’t socialist, right? Yeah right. Then he goes on to…

Ideas: The Content of Cognition and the Flames of a Revolution

Ideas are formally known as “the content of cognition” or the main thing of which you are thinking. That may be the dictionary (or technically the Wikipedia) definition, but for many of us, ideas are much more than that. Ideas were a common theme in Ron Paul’s presidential campaign. From the Rally for the Republic he said, “Ideas spread, they cannot stop them. Ideas whose time has come cannot be stopped by any government or any army.” I think an important difference between Ron Paul’s campaign, and the campaigns of other candidates, especially Obama’s, is that Ron Paul wasn’t trying…

To Die is Gain…?

This was first published in the fall of 2009 at Northern Illinois Liberty This has been my first Veterans Day as an outspoken and staunch non-interventionist. I would conclude that this is not our favorite holiday. Non-interventionists are just not popular on Veterans Day, for obvious reasons.  We are different, we stick out, we look just a bit crazy, maybe a little selfish, unpatriotic, oh well, I won’t go on.  So what exactly is it about us? Why are we so dogmatic, and almost Scrooge-ish about Veterans Day? I could say a lot to answer that, but I won’t. I…
