Top Fav Bands, #5: The Avett Brothers (Post 1)

I decided to do a series of music videos from my top 5 favorite bands. This was pretty challenging as I had to narrow it down to 5, but I felt it was a good exercise for me. So, for the next few weeks, I’ll be posting my favorite songs from my favorite bands. This week it is The Avett Brothers, who made it to 5th place, beating out others such as The Head & The Heart, The Lumineers, Matt Kearney, and Sleeping at Last. Also, I did not take into consideration my favorite instrumental/epic songs, as that’d be just…

Remembering the Eleventh Hour

Four years ago today, Matt Smith’s first episode as the Doctor, The Eleventh Hour, was broadcasted. In honor of that (and as a fun break from my chemistry final), I thought I’d post some of my favorite scenes from his era.                   And I guess it is appropriate to end with this one, from the 2013 Christmas Special, when Matt Smith regenerated.

NaPoMo: Acrostic

One of my friends is celebrating National Poetry Month by featuring a different poem form each day on her tumblr. She is encouraging others to follow along and write their own poems in each form. I am a bit behind, so this is the poem I wrote for the one she posted yesterday, an acrostic. Slipping into our view at last Promising sultry summer days Renewing hope in sunshine. Inebriated by sunlight, we make New attempts at this thing called life Giving thanks for every moment. ~ S.D.L

NaPoMo: Street Song

Welcome to April, National Poetry Month! To celebrate, I’ll be posting poems here through the month, and will attempt to write some of my own! So here is a poem I stumbled across today in a new book of poetry… Street Song Like an eddying willow leaf I stand on the street and turn: people, both ways coming and going around me, swirl: probably I am no stiller– detached; but gold is coming into my veins ~ A.R. Thoughts on Transform Rockford

After attending the last Transform Rockford community visioning session last night, I wrote a post describing the event. For the sake of brevity (or my feeble attempt at it) I didn’t really give much commentary on the organization itself. I am never short on opinions, so I know my readers would be disappointed if they didn’t get to hear my views on Transform Rockford.  As an introduction, I’ll admit I went to this meeting with much skepticism. I didn’t want to actually make a judgement without attending at least one event, but I was cynical, to say the least. The event turned out to…

Transform Rockford: Final Visioning Session

After a couple months of following the Transform Rockford calendar, I was finally able to attend their meeting tonight, at the RVC Woodward Technology Center. I almost didn’t go (there is a chemistry final looming over me this week…) but figured I better go now or I’d never make it. It was a good choice because as it turns out, this was the last community visioning session that they are holding, so I was glad to participate in that. A little background for those who aren’t familiar with Transform Rockford. I was not aware of the organization until February…I think they launched some time…

How Do You Know?

I’ve been taking this online class,  Intro to Philosophy, which is quite fascinating! The first week dealt with the obvious question, “what is philosophy?” and then the second week was on epistemology. Or, the question, “how do we know what we know?” Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that deals with the question of knowledge. The lesson was quite basic and didn’t get into a lot of areas that I would have loved to hear about, but the lectures did confront the question of radical skepticism. As in the first week, when I realized that by the accepted definition of philosophy,…

Paperless Paper

I was completely unaware of the new Facebook app until it was actually released. When I saw mention of it in my Facebook feed, I decided to give a try. Because I’m the kind of person who downloads new versions of apps as soon as they’re released. After reading about this new app, Paper, I was all the more eager to try it. I intensely dislike the Facebook mobile app design (and don’t get me started on Messenger…) so I’m game for anything that promises to be even a slight improvement. I was quite pleasantly surprised by Paper. It has a simple and beautiful…

Reflections on the Debate

To preface this, I enjoyed live blogging the debate last night! Here’s my live blog post if you want to look at it. It was so much fun that I’m looking for another event to live blog, so let me know if you have any suggestions! In hindsight, I think it would have been helpful to give more details as to what was actually happening, to better contextualize the statements. But it was a good first attempt! What the live blogging did for me was capture my thoughts as I had them, so today I can just run through my comments…
