Transform Rockford: Consensus or Compromise?

After my previous posts about the Transform Rockford movement, I’ve been asked about the organization’s process to create consensus during their visioning sessions. To recap what I previously explained…at the meeting I attended, we were asked to write down the top 10 things we would like to see in Rockford’s future. Then the attendees were split into groups of 5 people to narrow down their own vision statements into 5 statements for each group. I was going to try to explain the details of the process, but it is confusing unless you actually do it. The process goes, generally speaking, like this: your…

NaPoMo: Waiting

A muted and still afternoon, like all the world is waiting for the heavy clouds to break loose and flood us with a violent downpour. Like we’re all just waiting for life to happen to us– waiting to be drenched in the raw pureness of reality– hoping the rain will wash away our nightmares and leave us with a world reborn. – SDL

NaPoMo: Slam Poetry

I’ve recently become really, really interested in slam poetry. I’m still trying to figure out how to write my own for the poetry challenge my friend is doing on Tumblr, but in the meantime, here’s one slam poem I absolutely love.

Top Fav Bands, #5: The Avett Brothers (Post 1)

I decided to do a series of music videos from my top 5 favorite bands. This was pretty challenging as I had to narrow it down to 5, but I felt it was a good exercise for me. So, for the next few weeks, I’ll be posting my favorite songs from my favorite bands. This week it is The Avett Brothers, who made it to 5th place, beating out others such as The Head & The Heart, The Lumineers, Matt Kearney, and Sleeping at Last. Also, I did not take into consideration my favorite instrumental/epic songs, as that’d be just…

Thus Concludes My Chemistry Adventures

After several days of my desk and most of my floor being covered with chemistry notes in preparation for the final, I am officially done with my chemistry class! : ) It was really fun and challenging, but I am quite happy to be done. I like a bit of science and math, but not too much, haha. With National Poetry Month starting, it took a lot of discipline to study for this final instead of writing poetry. Now I think I’ll be focusing on econ and history to get ready for Mises U this summer. I’m looking forward to…

NaPoMo: Reflections on Emily Dickinson

This post was originally published in October 2013, but I decided to resurrect it for National Poetry Month. I was looking for a favorite poem to post and this one came to mind…so then I figured I might as well include my short essay, haha.  I am taking this MOOC (massive open online course) on Modern and Contemporary Poetry which is just amazing. I’ve always enjoyed classic poetry but never really got into the newer stuff. Until now, that is. The format of this course is great, I love the group discussions and interaction between all the participants. One of…

Remembering the Eleventh Hour

Four years ago today, Matt Smith’s first episode as the Doctor, The Eleventh Hour, was broadcasted. In honor of that (and as a fun break from my chemistry final), I thought I’d post some of my favorite scenes from his era.                   And I guess it is appropriate to end with this one, from the 2013 Christmas Special, when Matt Smith regenerated.
