I had a fantastic weekend and am now getting back into the swing of things. So to report on my holiday…
The drive to St. Louis went smoothly, despite heavy fog, high winds, and occasional torrential rain. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but overall I enjoyed the challenge. It was the longest I’ve ever driven myself, so I feel quite accomplished. Maybe a road trip across the country will be in order next : P The concert was AMAZING! I honestly had not listened to a lot of the Avett Brothers’ music prior to the concert. I really liked a couple of their songs but had not gotten into them like Future of Forestry, Mumford and Sons, or Bastille. But I just knew that seeing them in concert would be spectacular, and I was not disappointed. Their songs had me on the verge of tears several times and it was just such a fantastic experience. Their lyrical and musical range is stunning. Just as with my other fav bands, everyone can play several instruments, and it is fun to watch them switch between almost every song. There was a great part where one of the brothers was playing the piano, and his brother switched with him mid-song, without skipping a beat. The concert was in the Peabody Opera House, a beautiful setting, and the stage set-up was well done and simple. The focus of the show was obviously the music, not the background or lighting.
There’s something indescribable about a good concert experience. It can be like experiencing a good movie or book. The event takes you out of yourself and is transformative, in a way. There’s no way to put into words the way I’ve felt at any concerts. You lose yourself in the sharing of our common experience of being human. Good art allows you to process your own emotions through something greater. Sometimes we cry during movies because it is sad, but also because it is a medium for us to express what we’re feeling as an individual. So The Avett Brothers’ concert was one of those experiences, and it was definitely worth the drive to St. Louis!
I found some pictures posted online from the concert, so you can take a look at those!
And here are a few of my favorite songs:
